Yet another barrell cut down, this on from 24" to 20" inches , in the photo with the five round group off to the side of paper that is how much his group moved after cut and recrown, in the photo with the group inside the inch square note that there was a 3 round group on the bottom edge of the circle then he dialed up 1/4 min for a four round group. and the picture with the gentleman holding the rifle is just a very happy sniper.

I was there yesterday with that other student whose barrel was shortened by 4 inches at the end of the third day of the 5-day Sniper/Counter Sniper class. He was initially very hesitant and was having small fits (like an expectant father) when the barrel was being cut. It didn't help when he chewed tobacco for the first time in a long time (or ever) and was in an "elevated" state. He's a real happy camper now with the definite increased accuracy of his sniper rifle but wishes he had done it sooner like after the first day since he had to reacquire all the dope for the various distances from 200 to 920 yards which he got during the first three days.

Rob Pettorsson, one of the instructors this week, offered to camo paint students' rifles but so far nobody has taken him up on it.

a) Is 18" & 20" 'close enough'?

b) If no & cutting is recommended, how much room do I need to leave between the flutes & the new muzzle?

c) If I do cut, I'm thinking about getting it threaded at the same time, just to leave me more options. Bad/good?

And for the complete picture: no Mil/LE mission (anymore). Long range recreational targets, and a Katrina-neighborhood-style stand-off weapon if the SHTF in my backyard. (highly unlikely)

I plan to take the course next year, or possibly the year after, depending on fund$ & the work schedule.

Thanks for your help.

I cut my fluted barrel right thru the fluting so now it runs all the way to the end of the barrel. Shoots like a champ.
