Default 87 Grain 5.56mm match ammo

P7290952 - Copy.JPG

Has anyone seen this? 87 grain match-grade 5.56! It's not supposed to fit in mags or feed but apparently it does! It fits and feeds in all 20 and 30 rd mags as seen above.

It's shoots sub moa at 100 yards. I've shot this to 920 yards with a 10.5" 5.56 on an steel IPSC target last month. I also shot it to 1365 yards with my 18" SPR.

Wow...I've never seen loaded rounds in that heavy a bullet weight for a 5.56. I know Sierra offers a 80 and 90 grain bullets in the .224 diameter for handloaders, but I wasn't aware that there was anybody out there that offered loaded rounds. Sounds like they shoot really well.

Seems like the 87 grain 5.56mm came about during the Mk262 ammo selection for the Mk12 SPR. The slides in the link below say:

Quote:

27 different Off-the-shelf cartridges tested, down selected to three, (73 gr. Berger, 87 gr. PRL, and 77gr. Sierra)

Berger sold and moved facilities, causing manufacturing reliability issues, PRL shut down, leaving Sierra
Interesting slides including performance comparisons between M855 and AA53 (77 grain Sierra).

I couldn't get any info from Barnes about the 87gr bullets.

But they did tell me they are planning to introduce a new 85gr .224 cal Match bullet to the public next year.

"The 85gr .224 cal bullet will be designed for use in the M16/AR type rifles and their magazines".
